Shaping a Nation: Twentieth Century American Architecture and Its Makers
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (January, 1998)
Author: Carter Wiseman
Average review score:

Well written, well organized, beautifully illustrated.
I am interested in architecture, but not an architect. I found this book to be an excellent guide to 20th century American architecture, specifically the various movements and their underlying theories (in a nutshell), the leading personalities, and many significant buildings. There are many outstanding photographs, beatifully printed in a generous size (I hate looking at tiny photos of large buildings, or too large photos of a chair). The chapters have clever, alliterative names, a great deal of care has gone into this book. My only wish was that it would have had an index in the back of the book of all the buildings mentioned, listed by state and city, so that one might be sure to look at them if one happened to pass through that town. (The author is not afraid to criticize, and say why, or praise, and say why, but this is never intrusive, it comes across as intelligent and reasonable opinion, that one can consider and agree or disagree. Highly recommended if you are interested in current architecture and its evolution.

Silver Rights
Published in Paperback by Harvest Books (October, 1996)
Author: Constance Curry
Average review score:

This book looks into the soul of a very brave family.
Silver Right is a moving and telling story of my family struggle to achieve equality in America. This book does a very good job of relating the feeling, fear and turmoil that I felt during those four long years of being the only black family at an all white school in the Mississippi Delta in the sixites. Silver Rights goes beyond the actions of people during that time. It looks at the cilvil right movement on a personal level. This book will make you laugh, and it will also make your cry

Solomon D. Butcher: Photographing the American Dream
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Nebraska Pr (January, 1986)
Authors: John E. Carter and Solomon D. Butcher
Average review score:

"A Wonderful and Little Known Book."
A wonderful and little known book, by a wonderful and little known photographer. Butcher photographed small towns and rural prairie life in central Nebraska from the 1880's to the turn of the century. These are documentary photographs that are almost surreal in their intensity. Sod houses, portraits of wide-eyed families, towns slapped down for no particular reason - odd writing on the negatives - as well as birds and trees sketched in to satisfy Butcher's sense of natural history gone awry. A great book.

Author: Lonnie Carter
Average review score:

remarkable, ingenious and exciting use of language!
Carter's Soovereign State of Boogedy Boogedy is a wild ride. Best you see it on stage but if it's not "in a theatre near you," the book will do just fine!. No one uses and plays with words as Lonnie Carter does. You may not catch it all but you'll have a grand time trying. If you love theater or language or humor or even the Book of Daniel, do yourself a favor -get this book! Now!

The best little key in my library
I've been using this simple key since I was a college student in Minnesota over forty years ago. Although I now own several large comprehensive keys, this is the first key I try, even though it may not be spring and I now live in Connecticut. It will usually send me quite easily at least to a family, probably to a genus, getting me through what might be the most annoying portion of my larger keys.
